On this page, we present our protocol and standards to ensure an exceptional quality of care for our guests.
We have studied the Canadian Veterinarian Medical Association recommended codes of practice, the professional ethics of reputable breeders and shelters, as well as many other documents and guidelines used by any association involved in the well-being and protection of domestic animals. We have ennobled those codes and guides so that our mission will carry out our care giving to the animals with professionalism, integrity and effectiveness. In the following paragraphs, we are exposing some of the main norms we apply in our shelter.
All in all, the procedures explained herewith do apply as a basic lodging and caring method for all species of animals. But they are, in no way, rigid except for what concerns the minimum standard of comfort for our guests.
These guidelines are adapted mainly for cats and dogs but also concern reptiles, birds, and all other guests. We adapt to each and every animal in regards to his needs and comfort.
STERILIZATION
All the dogs and cats which we lodge must be sterilized as a preliminary. When they are not it, we ask for a written authorization of the family to proceed to it, and the required fees are to be paid by the family since the AnimEscale does not receive any governmental subsidy or enough donations to assume all these charges. For example, any not sterilized female must be kept isolated of the other males and this would imply an additional isolation and room. The same applies to the males and thus all the animals must be spayed or neutered. You will understand that non fixed animals would require buildings of enormous dimensions! And since we offer complete freedom within our mission, these applications would be contrary to our basic standards; we invite you to consider/plan the sterilization of your animal if you already think of leaving the residence in a nearest future. To be able to carry out sterilization, your veterinary surgeon will vaccinate your animal prior.
HEALTH BOOK
When it is possible, we appreciate that the legal guardian of the animal gives us the health book, or copy so we can verify the vaccines history and medical record, nous apprécions que le carnet de santé de l'animal nous soit remis afin que nous puissions connaître les vaccins, médications, chirurgies et autres traitements qui font partie de son historique médical. Les animaux entrant à la mission doivent avoir une vaccination à jour et dans le cas contraire, notre vétérinaire administrera la vaccination dès l'arrivée de l'animal.
The animals, just like humans, are unique in each of their species but also as individuals. So, the standards we apply may and must be adapted to meet the needs of each and every one of those we welcome in our mission, as requested by its breed, weight and fondamental needs as well as living habits (feeding, comfort, exercice, etc.).
Our premises are kept absolutely clean and adequately furnished to meet the requirements of all species that we welcome.
The AnimEscale has the privilege and the moral obligation to families, for any health and/or security reasons, should there be a behavior problem that may represent a threat to the quietness of our shelter, to contact immediately the legal guardian of an animal that may represent a risk. Any such situation, that means a danger for the other guests of our mission, will be promptly resolved with adequate corrective and rapid action. In such a situation, should no other mutually acceptable solution be found, it may be necessary to give the animal back to its legal guardian without any further delay. Should the guardian be unable or did not want to take back the animal, it may be placed for adoption. Eventual adoptive family will be advised of whatever the problem is with the pet.
All species and all breeds have their own specific characteristics. Furthermore, the environment in which the animal was raised and lived has its influence on the animal behavior. For example, if samll dogs breeds demand more attention than larger breeds, this is not invariable. A larger dog may need even more care and attention than a tiny one in some cases. The genetics is also a factor on an animal development and attitude. For instance, a dog properly be fond of and socialized will be less inclined to develop illnesses and/or tensions than another one less fortunate, no matter what breed he is... This applies to cats and birds (hand fed for instance). Tanking these factors in account and so many others that have an effect on the animal behavior, we adopt a protocol adapted to its needs. A sensitive approach cannot be even and unidirectional and so it is in constant evolution, according to the development rythm of a specific animal.
We favor the grouping, socialization, interaction between humans and animals and, unless otherwise required by the species or recommended by the veterinarian, all of our guests are moving freely in our mission, in the respect of their basic needs for freedom and comfort. Furniture is displayed to reproduce a standard home and every item is completely and entirely cleaned frequently, the furniture being thoroughly cleaned weekly since the animals can lay comfortably on them as they wish.
Besides dogs, all other animals are kept inside at all times, unless otherwise requested by the legal guardian. We do not recommend that other species are allowed outside, in order to prevent escapes, accidents or any possible injury or inconvenience.
Cages, litters, land and all equipment (toys, blankets, cushions, bowls, etc.) are cleaned daily and are maintained clean as they are frequently, during the day, rinced and filled with fresh water or food, before being given from one animal to another, etc.
Upon departure of one of our guests, all accessories that were used for his convenience are systematically disinfected.
CLEANLINESS OF PREMISES AND EQUIPMENT
We maintain humidity, temperature, lighting, sunlight, ventilation, aire conditioning and heating at normal comfortable levels both for humans and animals. Should there be one or many species requiring special environmental conditions, for example additional heating for some reptiles, aquariums, etc., we make sure that we respect pertaining standards as the legal guardian would indicate. When the admission form is filled, these particularities must be indicated by the owner, evaluated by our representative and respected througout the staying of the pet.
As a genral rule, our premises are kept at 22 degrees (Celcius), humidity level between 40 and 60% depending on the seasons. Drafts, sudden cooling, high temperature, excessive humidity level and any other uncomfortable situation for humans and animals are prevented at all times.
Any elderly or handicaped animal, or one being in a special physical or psychological condition requiring special treatment (such as medication or any other adapted treatment), will get the proper attention.
These specifications must be indicated by the legal guardian upon admission in order to help us answer special needs.
Nutritional needs of the animals are very different in regards to its age, psychological or physical condition, its health record and specific condition (gestation, obesity, thinness, etc.) and his living habits.
Unless contrary medical advice, we give high quality manufactured dry food to our guests, given in accordance to the needs of puppies, kittens, baby birds, adults or older animals.
Complementary feeding will be offered as indicated by the legal guardian. Dry food for birds, cats, dogs and others is complete an adequate; but fresh food, like nuts, fruits, vegetables, etc. can be given to our guests, should their guardian indicated so or for some species where we know it is beneficial like exotic birds. The staying report giving at the departure of an animal to its guardian will specify any additional food given and the preferences of the animal will be indicated as well.
In the kitchen area, fresh water is always available to the pets just as it is in bird cages and aquarium water which is controled daily. Our bowls are stainless steel made which makes them easy to clean. The same applies for our quarantine room, maternity room, cages, etc. Suction pads prevent the bowls from spill.
All of our utensils are in stainless steel as well, so we can daily completely clean them and be assured they are sanitary.
Cages, except for birds, are only used to control behavior disorders that can jeopardize other guests security and tranquility, or may represent a risk for the caring personel.
When a restraining cage is used, temporarily or for a longer period of time, the legal guardian will be informed. In all cases, cages are of sufficient dimensions for the animal to lay down (lateral, flat, side, etc.), turn around, stand up comfortably, etc. and a cushioned flooring is included. the cage is put in a location where the animal can still see and socialize with other animals and humans. Should a pregnant female be in a cage, she will be able to comfortably nurse her babies, without being disturbed.
No animal will be kept in a cage for more than three (3) consecutives hours, excepts for a behavior problem in which cases the playing and liberty periods will be evaluated by our veterinarian, behaviorist and in accordance with the legal guardian consent.
All cages have a wire netting bottom to allow faeces evacuation in a disposal tray easy to clean, and also have a smotth surface flooring and/or cushion for the resting needs of the animal. The paws cushions of animals are extremely sensitive and this is why we supply them with a smooth and safe resting area in each and every cages we use. Each cage is equiped with a water dispenser which is checked frequently to maintain sufficient fresh and constant supply.
This applies to any animal, others than those usually kept in a closed environement, such as birds, fishes, reptiles, etc. and according to the normal living habits of our guest.
AnimEscale: Because violence hurts them just as bad...
All animals need an appropriate playtime and exercice periods daily, In order for the pet to exert its energy, each and every day, our guests are played with by our personel. Also, the playtime period will be, should the animal tolerate it, in the company of other companions ans breed siblings. Otherwise, should the pet not tolerate this socialization, playtime will be provided without any other animal being present.
Pregnant females have access to a quiet delivery and feeding room, under constant supervision in the first days following birth of the babies.
The pregnancy room is equiped, for each expecting or nursing mother, with a small and clean box with four sides, a comfortable cushionny bottom of just about three times the size of the mother. A heating source is also provided, should the mother wish to walk away from the nest for a while, for exercice or other needs. Our veterinarian is provinding judicious counseling and constant assistance in all those cases.
We bathe and groom (brushing, combing, nail clipping, ears/eyes/anal/vulva, etc. cleaning) as required by the species.
We also massage dogs, cats and rabbits once a week with a lavander essential oil, which is calming and provides a soft and shiny coat.
Any contraindication will be noted in the staying report of the animal, as declared by its legal guardian.
Except for animals who are used to being transported in a carrier, any transportation may cause a stress and discomfort.
We use transportation carriers large enough for the animal to be safe and comfortable, where he can lay down and rest as much as possible. We place blankets to cushion the cage bottom.
The carriers are securely maintained in place. Furthermore, the temperature inside our vehicle is kept at a comfortable level. No stopping is allowed during transportation to the mission, for meetings with the animal family, upon departure or visit to veterinarians, groomers, etc.
An animal is never left alone in a vehicle, no matter what the outside temperature is, no matter what season it is. when extremely cold, a blanket is added on top of the carrier, but leaving the animal enough seeing ability.
The shorter trajectory is always used at all times.
We do not use tranquillizers or sedatives, unless otherwire specified by the legal guardian or medical recommendation.
We make sure that our environment is secure for all of our guests and no combustible or dangerous toxic substances are kept nearby the animals. This material is kept in a locked room, away from the pets.
An alarm protection device is installed, to protect the mission from any intrusion, to give an immediate alert in case of fire or any other incident threatening the security of the premises and the animals. Fire extinguishers are disposed in strategic locations and frequently verified as requested by law. an emergency evacuation plan is prepared and all personel is trained to react properly in case of an evacuation.
The grounds where the dogs play is enclosed and kept clean. The surface is exempt from cluttering which can injure or cause wounds to the animals.
EMERGENCIES AND UNFORESEEN INCIDENTS
Prevention is our main concern for a sanitary and secure management of our premises. But, despite our efforts, emergencies and unforeseen incidents may occur. We cant count on the availibility of our veterinarian and his profesional team should a situation take place. We have prepared a detailed and complete procedure for emergencies to intervene promptly and adequately in cases of bitings, escapes from a cage or housing (bird cages, vivariums, etc.), delivery complications or any other situation. We have minimized the risks by having a responsible and preventive protocol. In case of an emergency, we will react towards all of our guest as if they were ours, and we will make sure that all of our actions are in the best interest of the pets we welcome.
In addition to the above, since prevention is the mother of safety, our veterinarian is adapting his medical preventive treatments according to the species and quantities of animals hosted. He is also our partner in elaborating our emergencies measures.
PREVENTION AND CONTROL OF DISEASES AND PARASITES
For puppies and adult dogs, as well as for many other species, internal parasites are frequent. We have a control program and the faeces are regularly examined. Any infected animal is immediately treated for parasites and intestinal worms, our installations carefully disinfected to prevent spreading. Any animal under treatment is isolated during the recovery untill completely healed.
In order to prevent illnesses, we screen our guests by inspecting their flesh, fur or feather coat, skin and other visible signs; all of which are immediately reported to our veterinarian. We have a quarantine isolation room where a sick animal can be comfortable while treated and/or to prevent spreading of the illness. We have an efficient and strict protocol to prevent propagation.
We keeep a register for each of the animals we care for, which contains:
- admission form
- sterilization form
- the staying report, for the legal guardian or adoptive family information
- the health record (veterinarian care schedule and report)
- the departure form
These files are kept up to date at all times and are available for consultation by the veterinarian, behaviorist, groomer, legal guardian, adoptive family and members of our personel. We keep our records (paper and/or computer) in file for a period of five (5) years.les dossiers (tant informatisés que copies papier) de chacun des animaux pour une période de cinq (5) ans.
According to the veterinarian code of practice and our own medical consultant, we vaccinate all animals upon arrival at the AnimEscale. We apply the Canadian Veterinarian Medical Association vaccination charter for cats and dogs. We insist that if vaccines are not updated, the legal guardian has to pay the cost of necessary vaccination.
All routine vaccines and recalls given to an animal are noted in the health book we fill in for each of our guests. For example, for dogs, the usual vaccines are given, including rabies, coronavirus, Bordetellosis, parvovirus, canine distemper, Infectious Canine Hepatitis, Parainfluenza, Leptospirosis, Lyme disease (Borreliosis) and any other vaccine specific to a species or breed.
Vaccines for cats are similar. As far as other animals are concerned, our veterinarian will schedule the vaccination program required. Any epidemic situation that may require immediate vaccination for the animals will be administred as well without delay.
Should the legal guardian bring the health certificate with the animal upon arrival, the vaccine treatment will be eased.

VACCINES
Dogs and cats MUST have their up-to-date shots BEFORE entering our mission, including Bordetella (kennel cough) for dogs and rhino-tracheitis for cats. We must be able to verify that the vaccines are up-to-date with your veterinarian should you not be able to bring the health certificate of your pet companion.
Cats must have been tested negative for feline leukaemia and feline aids.
FOOD
The legal guardian of the animal must supply necessary food for the entire stay of the animal at our mission. Otherwise, we will feed cats and dogs with vetdiet, offered by Mondou.
